Last week the Animikii team met up in person in beautiful lək̓ʷəŋən territory (Victoria, BC) last week for our first in-person retreat in several years - it was incredible to connect with each other and learn. For many of us it was the first time we’d been able to meet in person.
Between the Animikii 20th Birthday celebration, cultural learnings on the land, and in-person coworking, we made the most of our time together and it’s already inspiring our work.
This week, we share stories from Indigenous data warriors and a decolonial view of archaeology.
ICYMI - News from the Indigenous Tech world
In a recent article reflecting on the MIT Solve Finals, CEO Jeff Ward assets that Indigenous tech = climate tech. The image above, created by Lead Designer Tom Spetter, celebrates and embraces the teachings of the sweetgrass, fireweed, salal, salmonberry, and licorice fern - a metaphor for the interconnectedness essential in our approach to climate justice.
Also, you may remember hearing about Indigenous language tech developer Keoni Mahelona from this episode of the Tech Won’t Save Us podcast. Keoni was quoted in a recent Fast Company article on building better AI – by making it more trustworthy and less centralized.
